Following their award-winning production of ‘Jesus Christ Superstar’, WODS Musical Theatre Company returns to the Playhouse stage to entertain audiences with the Broadway musical 'Hairspray'.Hairspray is a musical based on the 1988 film of the same name by cult filmmaker John Waters. With music and lyrics by award winning duo Marc Shaiman and Scott Wittman, Hairspray originally opened to rave reviews on Broadway in 2002 winning eight Tony Awards. In 2007 the production opened in the West End and won the Laurence Olivier Award for Best New Musical. Subsequently, Hairspray the film was re-made in 2007 with an all-star cast, including John Travolta as Edna Turnblad!
It is Baltimore, 1962, where we meet larger-than-life Tracy Turnblad, a girl with a big heart, who follows her dreams of dancing on 'The Corny Collins Show' and being together with teen idol Link Larkin.
As well as show-stopping numbers such as 'You Can't Stop the Beat', 'Good Morning Baltimore' and 'Welcome to the 60s', the show carries a historic and timeless message about acceptance and looking past the colour of people's skin.
