Weston-super-Mare beaches
Weston-super-Mare is great family seaside resort. We've got a beautiful sandy beach that has amassed more than 23million views on Tik Tok and was crowned the best dog walking beach in the UK in 2023. We've also got our fabulous main beach with its loveable donkeys and famous Grand Pier. Then, there's Marine Lake swimming beach where the water is always in - even when the tide is out! We've got a lovely rocky cove at Anchor Head and we've got the Windzone at the South, or Royal Sands end of the beach, which is where the Blo-karters and the wind and kite surfers get their kicks. So if you want beaches, we've got it all by the bucket and spade load!
Weston beach
Weston's main beach is around two miles long and full of beautiful sand. It is where you will find our donkeys in the Summer. During high season you will also find the Funland funfair at the Tropicana entertainment venue. You can park right by the seafront on the red road for a fee. At busy times, and providing the signs and the tide times permit it, you can even park on parts of the beach itself. There are dog walking restrictions from May to the end of September. For those who don't like the feel of sand between their toes and those with mobility issues there is a flat promenade, with plenty of seats. The beach is home to our famous Grand Pier - an indoor theme park filled with family fun, the latest amusements, state of the art rides, an indoor Go-Kart track and much, much more.
Uphill Beach - Best Dog Walking Beach in the UK
Until 2023 this was a bit of a locals' secret but the cat, or perhaps we should say dog, is out of the bag now that it has been recognised by a leading holiday firm as the best dog walking beach in the UK. And it is not just Parkdean Resorts who think so, this sandy stretch has had more than 23.2million views on 'TikTok'. You can access the beach by simply carrying on walking to your left along the main beach if you are facing Weston's Grand Pier. You will walk past the Windzone, where Weston's action men and women have their fun on their kite boards, windsurf boards or Blo-karts, before coming to the beach with its estuary. Don't be tempted to walk out to Brean Down though, that large shoulder of rock rising out of the sea in front and to the left of you though, because that lovely sand will turn to sinking mud before you get there. If you want to reach Brean Down you can do it the safe way by walking into Uphill Marina and picking up the Brean Down Way from there.
Marine Lake - where the tide is always in
This pictureque sandy beach at the North End of the beach next to Knightstone Island is where the tide is always in so you can swim and learn to paddleboard whenever you want to without having to worry about tides and currents. The sea water at Marine Lake is kept in by the sea wall or causeway and replenished daily on the high tide. It is a dog-free zone all year round and there are cafes and toilets nearby. Marine Lake is also here where you will find, on an almost daily basis, the cold water swimmers who also like to swim near the Grand Pier when the tides permit. Marine Lake is also popular with photographers who love the leading lines of its causeway, symmetry of its railings and spectacular sunrises and sunsets.
The windzone
The Windzone is at the south end/Royal Sands end of Weston's beach. On breezy days it is the playground for wind and kite surfers as well as the Blo-karters who race along the sand in their three-wheeled sail karts. If tides and conditions permit, parking is often allowed on this part of the beach where dog walkers can walk without any restriction. These sportsmen and women provide a spectacular sight on days when the weather is in their favour.
Anchor Head
Weston isn't generally associated with rocks and pebbles but you can find both at Anchor Head where there is a lovely cove. It has a broken causeway heading in the direction of the derelict Birnbeck Pier. Don't be tempted to try and walk out at low tide because this stretch of water is what keeps our lifeboat crew busy.
Water Adventure Play Park
There’s more to a trip to the seaside than the beach at Weston-super-Mare thanks to the Water Adventure Play Park. This is a popular attraction on Weston's seafront and the adventure play-go-run equipment is open all year round (except in extreme weather) with the water splash operational throughout high season at a charge of £3 per day per child. It's perfect for families of children under the age of 13. As well as the splash pad, there is plenty of other play equipment such as swings, a zip wire and sandpit.
Weston Donkeys
Weston-super-Mare has long been famous for its donkeys and in the height of summer you can often see three separate groups of them providing rides for young children. The donkeys are an iconic part of the town’s seaside charm, beloved by locals and tourists alike. For over 130 years, donkey rides have been a staple of the beachfront, offering a nostalgic and fun experience for children and families, creating memories that are treasured by generations. Each ride is supervised by experienced handlers who ensure the donkeys’ well-being and maintain a safe, enjoyable experience for both the animals and the riders.
