About Us
The granting of the Freedom of the Town of Weston-super-Mare to 40 Commando Royal Marines will take place on Saturday 21st June at 11.00 hours.500 Marines from 40 Commando will parade through the Town led by the Band of Her Majesty’s Royal Marines. The parade will go along Locking Road into Regent Street so there will be plenty of places to see the Marines as they march to receive the highest honour the Town can give them. The ceremony is in Princess Royal Square which is near the Grand Pier on the Sea Front.
When the freedom of the Town has been granted the Royal Marines will exercise the freedom by marching off with swords drawn, bayonets fixed, drums beating, bands playing and Colours flying. As the Royal Marines march off there will be a flypast by a helicopter from Commando Helicopter Force and an 11 Gun salute by 29 Commando Artillery Unit on the beach near to the Grand Pier.
The freedom parade will march along Beach Road to the end of Carlton Street; turn right onto Marine Parade, Oxford Street and into Station Road. The Mayor will take the salute as the parade approaches Oxford Street. You will need to get to Princess Royal Square early to see the ceremony as large crowds are expected to witness this memorable occasion
