About Us
The circle is a universally recognised symbol, a continuum with no beginning and no end, and is sometimes regarded as a metaphor for life.
The installation comprises three floor based circular pieces, each measuring 180cm in diameter. A simple ‘green’ hazel ring, turns into a circle of charred hazel twigs enclosing a mass of dried hawthorn berries, and ends with a jet-black wheel of hazel sticks.
Widden uses the natural world for both inspiration and material, creating contemporary artworks using traditional rural skills such as splitting, stripping, and charring of wood. The materials gathered, and the preservation and decomposition of this material, continue to be important in her work, and reflect her preoccupation with the passage of time and the fragility and preciousness of life. www.gillianwidden.com
