About Us
As part of 'Heritage Open Days' nationwide activities (9 and 10 September 2016) Wells Cathedral will be opening up its famous chained library for FREE taster tours.Wells Cathedral has one of the very few chained libraries remaining in Britain. Come and see chained books and hear the history of our unique library which dates from 1450. This is a taster tour of around 20 minutes offering an insight in small groups of 8. Unfortunately the tour is not suitable for wheelchairs as the Chained Library is accessed via a medieval stone corkscrew staircase.
Places are limited and MUST be booked via the Cathedral's website or Eventbrite. Simply choose the date and time of your choice. (No children under 10).
Wells is easily reached by both car and public transport. Regular bus services to and from Wells operate from Bristol, Bath and across Somerset. There are several car parks near the Cathedral and a wide range of local cafes, restaurants and bars to help you to make a day of it, including our own Cathedral café. Why not make a day of it at the popular Wells Market held every Wednesday and Saturday.
