A giant sculpture made from more than 100,000 seized knives and blades will be on show in Weston-super-Mare throughout May as part of a national tour designed to illustrate the devastating impact of violent crime
The 27-foot-tall Knife Angel will dominate the Italian Gardens for four weeks providing visitors with a unique and thought provoking experience.
The three tonne sculpture was designed by Alfie Bradley at the British Ironwork Centre as a national monument against violence and aggression. It is constructed using blades confiscated by 43 police forces across the UK.
Some of the blades have inscriptions etched onto them from families of the victims of knife crime. Make sure you also look at the back of the statue to see the swords and machetes which chillingly run down the Knife Angel's spine.
After dark, the statue takes on a completely different look as it is illuminated in several colours.
The Knife Angel has been touring towns and cities since 2018 and is a poignant tribute to people who have lost their lives to knife crime. Some of the blades on the wings of the angel are inscribed with the names of lost loved ones,
Creator Alfie Bradley, said: "Thirty per cent of the knives that are on the Angel were bloodied when we received them - they all had to be sterilised."
And he added that it was "a stark reminder" of the problem with knife crime in the UK.
The Knife Angel will be on show in Weston-super-Mare throughout May, closing on the evening of May 30, before making the long journey up to Sunderland for the next stage of the tour.
