About Us
Weston-super-Mare is fortunate to have a thriving, family-run, independent department store offering the best in mens and ladies fashion wear as well as home-ware. Having survived two world wars, the Great Depression of the 1930s and much more, Walker & Ling re-opens on 12th April with a fresh façade.
The store has graced our high street since 1904 and the Ling family came out of the business in 1936, the Walkers have run it ever since.
In June 1942, a 500lb oil bomb burnt most of the north end of the high street to the ground. Over 10 years, Walker & Ling was rebuilt and reinstated. When the shop officially re-opened in 1952, it was a very 'modern' building, in the architectural style of the day. It featured a mosaic of blue/green tiles, a walk-in 'vitrine' style window, and brass lettering over the doors. In 2021 the authentic style, in collaboration with North Somerset Council and Historic England, has been restored.
That’s not to say that some of the history of the building was all lost – the lift and the system of sending cash from the tills through tubes to the accounting office are all still there. But it’s the new look with the nod to the old look that is the exciting development, along with a style of service that retains the ethos over 100 years of putting the customer first.
Today, you’ll find top brands such as Joules, Seasalt, White Stuff, Skechers and Superdry, as well as Superdry for Women.
The lingerie department offers a proper bra fitting service – did you know that it’s estimated that over 80% of women wear the wrong sized bra? (This service is subject to current conditions of social distancing, please check in advance).
And there’s no need to worry if you’re visiting with your dog, no need to tie it up outside, bring your pooch in, dogs are welcome!
Other departments include dining, bedding, haberdashery, towels, knitting, luggage, small appliances and cook-shop.
You’ll find Walker & Ling in the high street opposite the Italian Gardens/town square.
